Not long ago, if you wanted to get rid of veins your only treatment option was invasive vein surgery or "vein stripping." Vein stripping is performed by tying off all or part of the vein and surgically removing it. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and requires several days to several weeks to recover. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort, as well as scarring, are common possible results of vein stripping.

Today, new developments in the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins offer the patients at our Houston vein clinic a number of minimally invasive alternatives to vein surgery. Dr. Bardwil is an expert in the latest vein treatments, including VNUS Closure®, endovenuos laser treatment (EVLT), ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, sclerotherapy, and ambulatory phlebectomy.

What are varicose veins?

Most commonly found on the legs, varicose veins are blue and ropy in appearance and are often a quarter of an inch or larger in diameter. Varicose veins usually form as a result of "venous insufficiency," when failing valves in the leg veins allow blood flow down into feet. Aching, heaviness, and fatigue in the legs are common with varicose veins. When varicose veins are left untreated, venous ulcers may form on the legs. Genetics/heredity, pregnancy, hormonal changes at menopause, and work or hobbies requiring extended standing may all contribute to varicose veins.

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are small blue or red vessels visible within the skin, usually on the leg, face, neck or chest. They have a web-like appearance, and may be blue or red color. Like varicose veins, spider veins may signal underlying vein disease, although they sometimes appear independent of underlying medical problems. If you suffer from spider veins, an ultrasound exam can establish the cause and identify the most effective treatment.
